Forum Komunikasi Pembangunan Indonesia(Communications Forum for the Development of Indonesia – FORKAPI) organized the International Symposium on "Development Communication in Sustainable Rural Development", on Wednesday, 30 October 2013. The first day of the vent was held at the Auditorium Andi Hakim Nasoetion, DarmagaCampus, Bogor. The first session presented Prof.Felix Librero, PhD (Professor Emeritus of the Open University of the University of the Philippines), and Prof.Adnan Hussein, Ph.D. (School of Communication, UniversitiSains Malaysia) as the Keynote Speaker. In addition, the OC also invited resource persons of government institutions and severalprivate companies that relate to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
The objectives of the symposium were to share communication knowledge among development communication experts from academics, practitioners, and other professions in the field of communication. Chairman FORKAPI, Prof.Dr.Ir.Aida Vitayala S. Hubeis stated, participatory and dialogic communication strategy is the best solution for publiccommunication in Indonesia. "We are seeking the best method as how to have friendly communication with the community," said Prof.Aida. Dean of the Faculty of Human Ecology, Bogor Agricultural University, Dr.ArifSatria, M.Si stated, that Indonesia is the big users of social media, which could be utilized as the mediator for educating the community. "These channels, should be utilized optimally by the government to disseminate messages that attract people’s attention."
Felix Librero, PhD talked on Development Communication Mindset. Prof.Felix Librero, PhD explained about the blurring of the boundaries of communication, community preparedness against current thinking, communication development, the emergence of a general communication strategy, and its association with the development communicators. Another expert invited also in this special event was Prof. Adnan Hussein, PhD, of Malaysiawho explained communication related to sustainable development in rural areas.
SelamattaSembiring, the Director General for Information and Public Communication, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Republic of Indonesia (Kemeninfo) presented his paper on the development of society by strengthening the independence of KelompokInformasiMasyarakat (KIM -Public Information Group) as a role model of participatory development. SelamattaSembiring stated, the methods of the Indonesian society communication is quite heterogeneous and have different capabilities in accessing communicationmedia. Some are easily to access the media of communication, information and communication technology, but some have difficulties to access them. "That’s the challenge forthe governmentto provide the appropriate developmentcommunicationsand how channelize the community’s inspiration to the government, as well as to empowering the social institutions of communication existed in societies," he said.
At the last session of this activity, the event were more lively with many attractive governmentspeakers, including: Drs.H.RahmatYasin, MM (Regent of Bogor) on ‘MewujudkanKomunikasi Pembangunan yang EfektifantaraPemerintahdanMasyarakat: StudiKasus Program Jumlingdan Boling di Kabupaten Bogor’ (Realizing Effective Development Communication between Government and Society: A Case Study Program and Friday Tour Boling in Bogor regency)’ , and Prof. Dr.. Hj. SylvianaMurni, SH, M.Sc. (Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta field of Culture and Tourism) onMembangunKomunikasi yang EfektifantaraPemimpindan Rakyat: Blusukansebagai Role Model(Developing Effective Communication between Leader and People: Blusukan as a Role Model). Itinerary items of the program of the second day included papers presentation on three sub-themes of the symposium. Those three sub-themes were Development Communication, Rural Development Communication, and Media and Information Technology.(Wied).
