Prof. Dr. Hugh Bigsby Delivered the Public Lecture at the Faculty of Forestry of IPB
Head of Accountancy, Economy and Finance Department of Lincoln University, New Zealand, Prof. Dr. Hugh Bigsby delivered the Public Lecture about the result of his research in Serawak. This public lecture was given in front of academicians of the Faculty of Forestry of IPB, Monday (16/4) at Campus of IPB Dramaga. ”We carry out the rubber forest research in Serawak, Malaysia. This forest is very potential to be developed to become the regional training center of tropical forestry management in Southeast Asia,” said Prof.Bigsby.
Prof. Bigsby is one of designers of the Post-Graduate Diploma in the field of Applied Science (Sustainable Forest Management), which is the cooperation between Serawak Timber Association (STA) and Lincoln University of New Zealand. “To realize that, we need the extensive forest for teaching-learning and training process used to demonstrate the sustainable forest management like Danun Conservation Forest and Dermakot Forest in Sabah,”said Prof. Bigsby.
In this occasion, Prof. Bigsby offered the cooperation in the field of forestry in the Facultry of Forestry. Dr.Tatang Tiryana, Manager of Educational Forest of Gunung Walat, the Facultry of Forestry of IPB explained the success of IPB in changing the empty land to become the dense resin and pine forests. “Once we work together to finance its management, now we can autonomously finance its maintenance.” The Educational Forest of Gunung Walat became the place of various activities in the field of forestry, both education, research, and tourism. In the area, the camp located in the middle of educational forest was built. In the camp complex, there were mess to spend the night, meeting room, class room, hall, mosque, kitchen and other facilities.
The Chairman of Forest Management Department of IPB, Dr.Didik Suharjito as the host of this public lecture delivered that this activity was spread out to expand the international cooperation in the field of forestry. “In the framework of going ahead to the international accreditation of Forest Management Department of IPB in order to increase the efforts of international cooperation as widespread as possible,” said Dr.Didik.
