Students IPB Develop Creative Learning Methods
It was fun and exciting after several times following the activities of the Rolling Learning Center (RLC) with the street children around the Darmaga Campus of IPB. The new method of learning that has been initiated by a team of Community Service Student Creativity Program of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and funded by DGHE gives a fresh new look to the world of education. Amalia Ferdowsi (20), Derry Ferdani Rustanzi (20), Sekar Ayu Wulandari (20), Dadi Irawan (18), and Larasati Dena Mardhika (19) are the originators as well as the instructors of the RLC. Together with the teaching supervisor Neti Hernawati SP, M.Si (Lecturer in the Faculty of Human Ecology IPB) they have a commitment to making this program for this street children. "It is very suitable for the street children, given their backgrounds that are very close to the condition outside", said Amalia.
Rolling Learning Center is a unique learning activity, directly from nature, nomadic, and fun. It is an interesting method of learning that balances on three aspects: audio, visual, and kinesthetic. Subjects taught to the street children are interesting Physics, Hanging Chemistry, Creativity of Lively), Good Entrepreneurship, Fun English Study, and others. In addition, they also teach morals and ethics in each meeting.
The teaching method applies concrete learning in each subject. "Just like last week (26/02) we teach the young entrepreneurship and economics directly in the location of Bogor Anyar market, they learn a lot of things – from buying what is assigned according to need, being creative, to re-selling their creations", Amalia added.
"We hope that they could be more persistent in doing business without having to beg, because they have the potential," added Sekar.
The five students of IPB possess the courage and are optimistic that the program will continue later. They said they feel very comfortable doing it with the street children, especially the new idea they initiated gives a positive signal to them. In the future they hope that this concept can be applied by the government and hope RLC can serve as an alternative non-formal learning for street children in other cities. (Mtd)
