Webometrics is a set of quantitative techniques for tracking and evaluating the impact of web sites and online ideas since 2004. Webometrics has classified more than 20 thousand universities in the world with its ranking based of the number of academic papers. The original aim of the Ranking was to promote Web publication.
To improve the understanding of general public on Webometrics, Bogor Agricultural University organized a workshop on the Ranking of the Institutional’ Web, held at the Andi Hakim Nasoetion Auditorium, Darmaga Campus, on 28 February 2012. The Organizing Committee (OC) invited Dr. (h.c.) Isidro F. Aguillo, founder of webometric of the Cybermetric Lab (CSIC), Spain.
The OC utilized the visit of Dr. Isidro as efficient as possible. On the second day of his visit, Dr. Isidro was invited as the keynote person for the internal seminar for Unit Heads and those who are in charge of the University’ web. This activity was not solely intended to improve the ranking of the University’ web, but to find out how to publish the repository or research results properly.
“We concentrated on the activities and impacts of education which can be published, not its rank. It is expected that the workshop will assist us to publicize our activities legally and correctly. This also will enable us to avoid data manipulation to achieve higher ranking, "said Vice Chancellor of Business and Communication, Dr. Ir. Arif Imam Soeroso.
On this special event, Dr. Arif presented data on the increasing number of the publication of the University IPB. On 2008, the position of the University was in the 2400 of the world publications. By publishing its activities, in February 2012 the position of Bogor Agricultural University has increased and reached the 1024 top level in the world publication. Based on the Dr. Isidro’ data, Harvard University still holds the top position. Followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Stanford University ranked second and third. Dr. Isidro reported that most of the research results from Indonesia were not published in the prestigious international journals. Their readers in general are local readers, they don’t plan to disseminate them for international readers.
"To be more popular, we should establish more links and increase our full texts, as well as improve the performance of the server. In addition, the University may establish relationships with other institutions, especially the medical schools. Moreover, the University may transform the name and its network from agricultural science into the environmental science or biodiversity and global change. However, the most important of all, we should increase and intensify our research programs and disseminate them through publicstions, "he said. The day before, in the “National Seminar on Webometric” at the IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Dr. Isidro said most of the existing website in Indonesia remains to be improved especially on the quality of its content.
"This is the best place in the website. Publishizing the repository of the University’ research results is the most important site to improved. The international audiences should be considred, not only local users. As this would give a great impact on the international level, "he said.
Previously as Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Dr. Kudang Boro Seminar explained that this important event was organized to explore ideas as to utilize open access for science and technology for end users. (Wied).
