Many Companies in Indonesia Not Aware of Environment
The many people who still do not understand about the various policies on the environment have caused the environmental management to remain a problem. This was expressed by the Executive Secretary of the Environment Research Centre under the Institute for Research and Community Services (PPLH LPPM) of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Dr. Ir Hefni Efendi, M. Phil as a resource person in the Dialogue of Bogor Dynamics at the RRI (25/10).
The issues range from the garbage problem to the many companies or business people who do not know that in order to establish a company they must equip it with a document of environmental management. Not only small companies but also large-scale enterprises are still found not to have the documents about the environment.
Dr. Hefni said such a document is important for all companies to possess particularly those that will directly cause environmental damage such as mining and forestry companies. Such regulation must be enforced so that there is a balance between exploration and rehabilitation. Based on the assessment of performance concerning the environment, Dr. Hefni said most companies in Indonesia have a blue rating downward, meaning that there is still a lack of awareness of environmental management. For this reason, it is necessary for the government to make a continuous socialization.
Furthermore, Dr. Hefni said environmental management also requires supervision. Supervision can be done by the community and government. This is necessary to ensure a balance between policies and management. Apart from that, Dr. Hefni said environmental environment should now be done not only from its downstream but also from its upstream. (Mtd)
