Licensing of Home Industry Products Expands Markets

Effective January 2011, the License application process for the Food as products of Home Industry (PIRT) is free. 100 (hundrd) licenses is available for Bogor regency and 210 (two hundred ten) for Bogor municipelity. The exiciting news cause happyness hundreds of participants for the Socialization of Licensing Procerss of Food of Home Industry (PIRT) and Halal Certification for Micro and Small Business of around the Darmaga campus, held at the Abdul Muis Nasoetion Building, on 23 June 2011.

All products produced by home industry of the 17 (seventeen) villages around the campus is expected to get the license and certified their halal status. Licensing Expands Markets for Brand Products, thus, these local products will compete with other products both in traditional markets and supermarkets

"Therefore, the Institute for Research and Community Services (LPPM) and the Center for Human Resources Development (P2SDM) IPB hold this event. 2 (two) speakers, one from the City Health Service, and the other one form LPPOM MUI of city and Bogor Regency, who are in charge directly for licensing and issuing halal label were invited to provide a complete understanding for the participants, "said Secretary of LPPM IPB Dr. Sulistiono.

With PIRT license and halal label, a product will be marketable and get added value. For example, there is one product of home industries that its starting price was Rp. 4.000,- (four thousand rupiah), but after it was licensed and got hala lable, its selling prices was increased into Rp. 15.000,- (fifteen thousand Rupiah), or even more.

"The pepetek fish I produced was initially a very cheap products. But after I successfully applied for licensing and got the halal status, then the selling price changed into Rp. 15,000,- to Rp. 30.000,- " stated Yanefri, one of the entrepreneurs.

Similar experience was also happened to Unandar, an entrepreneur from the Balumbang Jaya village, under the guidance of Bogor Agricultural University he successfully licensing and got halal certificates for his products (cassava geprek). On this occasion, Unandar encouraged hundreds of entrepreneurs from around the campus to apply for the licensing for their products and the halal certification as well.

"We must applying for Licensing PIRT of my products immediately. Previously, my products were accpeted by some stores but usually they were put somewhere behind. They were willing to accept our products just they felt pity on us, and they fear of being raided. But currently, Bogor is one of a city for culinary tourism, but most of the products for sale are no longer local products of Bogor. Let us expand our market by licensing our products to get halal status, "he said

In line with the promotion of Bogor as the City of Halal, the entire industry in around Bogor Agricultural University campus are encouraged to register their products. It is an appeal especially for home industry products, as the halal certification is voluntary and not mandatory. But for retail industries, it is mandatory for them to put halal labels issued by the MUI, in addition to licenses by the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Health. (Wied).
