IPB University and the Regency Government of Taliabu Island, North Maluku, have officially established a partnership. Through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), both parties agreed to collaborate to improve the management of village data as the foundation for regional development.

The MoU was signed by the Regent of Taliabu Island, Sashabila Widya, and the Rector of IPB University, Dr Alim Setiawan Slamet, at the IPB Taman Kencana Campus in Bogor on (4/7).

The Regent of Taliabu Island stated that this partnership marks the first step toward developing policies grounded in data and scientific knowledge. She emphasized the importance of accurate village data for mapping local potential and enhancing the effectiveness of regional development.

According to her, Taliabu Island Regency comprising eight districts and 71 villages still faces limitations in infrastructure and human resources. Therefore, a data driven approach is key to improving public services and economic growth.

“This collaboration marks the starting point for change through a science-based administrative approach. We want to ensure that development truly impacts the welfare of the community,” she said.

She also added that collaboration with universities is an important part of supporting national programs, including the One Data Indonesia initiative and President Prabowo Subianto’s development vision.

Meanwhile, Rector Dr Alim Setiawan Slamet welcomed this partnership. He described collaboration as the key to addressing increasingly complex global challenges, such as climate change, geopolitical dynamics, and technological advancements.

Dr Alim noted that Taliabu Island possesses significant natural resource potential, ranging from iron ore to the fisheries sector and plantation commodities like coconuts and nutmeg, which must be managed sustainably.

“This great potential must be properly prepared for, including post-mining planning and strengthening the region’s key sectors to ensure long-term benefits,” he said.

IPB University, he continued, is ready to provide support through various programs, such as village development, the creation of food self sufficient villages, and capacity building for village officials. Additionally, IPB University offers educational opportunities for local youth through scholarship programs and affirmative action pathways.

It is hoped that this collaboration will be immediately followed up with concrete programs that can drive development based on precise village data and improve the welfare of the community in Taliabu Island Regency. (dh) (IAAS/LAN)
