The Marine Science and Technology Student Association (Himiteka) of IPB University participated in the prestigious annual international climate conference, Indonesia Net-Zero Summit (INZS) 2024. Held at the XXI Djakarta Theater Ballroom, Central Jakarta, the event carried the theme “S.O.S. Neraka Bocor: Climate Avengers Assemble!”.

INZS 2024 served as a significant platform for stakeholders from various sectors, including ministers, government officials, diplomats, activists, and civil society, to gather and formulate strategies to address the increasingly urgent climate challenges in Indonesia.

This year’s theme highlights the critical global climate emergency, with the earth’s temperature exceeding the 1,5-degree Celsius threshold. The emphasis was on the need for concrete actions and collaboration from all parties, dubbed “Climate Avengers,” to prevent further disasters and damage.

Dino Patti Djalal, Founder and Chairman of the Foreign Policy Community Indonesia (FPCI), stressed the importance of maintaining public awareness and political momentum on climate change. During a press conference in Cikini, Central Jakarta, Dino said, “In many countries, although emission reduction goals are good, politics often don’t align. For example, in the United States, after the Paris Agreement, climate policy changed drastically when Trump took office.” Dino hopes the newly elected Prabowo-Gibran government will prioritize climate change in their policy agenda.

INZS 2024 featured insightful discussions, including focus group discussions (FGDs) with climate activists on renewable energy, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and nature-based solutions (NBS). Dino emphasized the urgency of 2030, when the global carbon budget will run out. If emissions are not controlled, global warming could surpass the 1.5-degree Celsius limit, threatening human survival. The main hope from these discussions is that Indonesia’s future policies align with the Paris Agreement commitments.

Prominent speakers at the event included Mari Elka Pangestu, Alue Dohong, Pahala Nugraha Mansury, Budisatrio Djiwandono, Ridwan Kamil, Arcandra Tahar, and Mikha Tambayong. Additionally, the Climate Hero Award was presented to Indonesia’s Finance Minister, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, for her dedication to climate change mitigation and environmental protection in Indonesia.

Himiteka IPB University, serving as an event partner, is committed to raising the visibility of INZS 2024 among the public. Hanan Nabeel, External Division Staff of Himiteka, stated, “With an inspiring theme and a substantive agenda, INZS 2024 is not just a forum for discussion but a critical milestone in global efforts to tackle the climate crisis and drive real action toward a more sustainable future.” (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
