IPB-UNIVERSITY OF ZURICH (SWITZERLAND) STRENGTHENED COLLABORATION

Rector of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Dr. Arif Satria, and delegation, during the visit to strategic partners in Europe, had the opportunity to call on the University of Zurich (UZH), Switzerland, which currently occupies the 78th position in the QS World University Ranking 2018. On that occasion on July 2nd, 2018, attended by the Pro-Rector of UZH, Prof. Dr. Michael Schaepman, the extension of cooperation agreement was signed for the period of 2018-2022. The signing of the mentioned agreement was witnessed by The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia in the Switzerland Confederation, Dr. Muliaman Hadad.

Indeed, one of the most significant outcomes of the IPB-UZH cooperation is the explicit declaration of a new species of great ape, The ‘Tapanuli Orangutan’ (Pongo tapanuliensis), in Batang Toru, North Sumatra, Indonesia that was published in 2017 under title of “Morphometric, Behavioral, and Genomic Evidence for a New Orangutan Species” in Journal of Current Biology. Three IPB researchers (Dr. Dyah Perwitasari Farajallah, Dr. Puji Rianti, and Dr. Joko Pamungkas) were actively involved in both the research and the journal writing. The results gained tremendous response and attention from the Swiss and wishfully research collaboration with high impacts such as the previous one should be carried out in other fields by taking advantage of Indonesia’s unique biodiversity through collaboration with reputable partners. Thus, the cooperation with the University of Zurich ought to be strengthened.

Dr. Arif as well proposed the elaboration of collaboration research focused on the orangutan. One of the most urgent issues is research on the management of science-based habitat for the orangutan in Sumatra and Borneo Islands in which, the involvement of students from both IPB and UZH is highly expected. Meanwhile, Dr. Muliaman mentioned the importance of expanding collaboration in other fields too, especially in incubator development for small and middle enterprises (SME) as Switzerland has vastly succeeded in SME development.
