Drinking Milk Together accompanied the commemoration of the National Milk Day of 2012 in the Auditorium of James Humuntal Hutasoit, Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Fapet), Dramaga Campus of IPB, Wednesday (6/6). Hundreds of cups of fresh milk, the products of Fapet, were drunk together by hundreds of students, teaching staff, educational staff, as well as the cadres of PKK, Posyandu and Posdaya from the villages around the campus.

Bismillaahirrohmaanirrohiim (In the name of Allah (God), Most Gracious and Most Merciful). Let’s drink fresh milk to keep the body fit and smart brain," said Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry IPB, Dr Luki Abdullah Luki, starting the joint drinking. With the campaign of drinking milk together, says Dr Luki, hopefully we always remember that there is a very important food source among us, namely milk.

Director of Agriculrural Food Processing, Ministry of Agriculture, Ir Nazaruddin, MM., said that FAO or the World Food Organization has declared a World Milk Day, intended to disseminate the advantages of milk, liquid foods that are beneficial to the body.

On this occasion, Dr Ir Luki and Nazaruddin, MM. agreed that the milk consumption of Indonesia is still very low, only 11.09 liters per capita per year. With this figure Indonesia is still below Vietnam, wich has reached 12.3 liters of milk per capita per year. "It means we only drink milk of just a few drops per day," said Dr. Luki.

This activity was also coupled with a seminar presenting the academicians in the field of milk processing, Dr Ir Rarah RAM, DEA., and Head of IPB Polyclinic Dr.dr. Sri Budiarti. They raised the topics "Bioactive Components of Milk, and Benefits" and "The Importance of Drinking Milk", respectively.

Dr Rarah explains that the fresh milk is pasteurized through heating process, but not to the boiling point so that its components are still intact in the fresh milk like raw milk. "To prevent milk from easily spoiling, store in the refrigerator or immediately use it up. Do not ever put the milk simply on the table because it will become sour, which will eventually damage the components of milk," explains Dr Rarah.

Meanwhile Dr Sri firmly says that drinking milk will not make a person fat. "As long as taken regularly, milk will balance the body metabolism," he said. (Mtd)
