FORESTRY DEVELOPMENT IN INDONESIA

News

The current climate change we suffer  is getting more and more extreme, one of the reasons for such situation is due to the many illegal logging. Indonesia’s tropical forests are being cleared at a record rate, with oil palm plantations emerging as a major threat.  This was stated by the Dean of Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Bambang Hero Saharjo, in the Morning Dialogue on "Forestry Development in Indonesia", at RRI, Jln Pangrango,  Bogor, recently.

If the oil companies which operate in our country, especially those that open their lands by slash and down systems or forest fire follow all the rule of the game, such disasters like floods and smoke pollutions won’t be occur. In fact, we’ve heard that due to smoke pollution is Malaysia and Singapore, those two countries complained our government. However, there are still many oil companies that follow the rule of the game, "said Prof. Bambang.

Such rule of the game, explained Prof Bambang, they should not just be kept on the file,  but they must be applied fully and properly in the real world and must be sustainable.

Meanwhile the condition status of  Bogor, according to Prof. Bambang,  mapping  the position of the  greenhouse effect   or  oxygen inhaler is really needed. Illegal  logging and other forest degradation process must be banned.

"When we plant trees, we have to take care of them. Do not leave them unattended. We should monitor them carefully.  Therefore, government policies are necessary to protect them. For areas pass by plenty of transportation vehicles, there should be green belt areas to neutralize the pollutions.  The local authority should plant a special tree species to reduce the pollution, "said Prof. Bambang.

In the question and answer session with the listeners, Prof. Bambang responded the question whether planting  teak surrounding neighborhood is allowed. "It’s okay, but we should select the appropriate tree and the soil types. They should not cause problems with the environment, especially their neighbors. Teak is good for Bogor area, "said Prof. Bambang.

To conclude  the dialog, he invited the community  who are interested in more detail about trees problems to contact him for consultation. (Wied).
