IPB University lecturers collaborated with the Banten Provincial Government (Pemprov) to implement booster bait: an appropriate technology to increase the margin value of small scale fishermen’s catches.

This Homecoming Lectures (Dospulkam) activity took the form of technical guidance on the use of the fish aggregating device booster application in Muara Village, Wanasalam District, Lebak Regency, Banten (6/26). The series of events was attended by the Village Chief and Secretary of Muara Village, the chief of neighborhood associations and community associations, as well as local fishermen.

Booster rumpon is a type of attractor that functions to lure and gather fish so that they are closer to the fishing gear. With this tool, fishing operations can be carried out quickly, easily, and produce more fish.

Several fishing gear that can use rumpon boosters include gill nets, traps, lift nets, circle nets, longlines, dragnets, and huhate.

Booster bait technology is urgently needed to increase catch and income for fishermen,” said Dr Zulkarnain, one of the speakers.

Dr Zulkarnain shared success stories of using bait boosters in several areas. The use of drifting bait boosters on longlines in the waters of Palabuhanratu Bay in 2023 successfully increased the marketing margin by 58 percent.

“The use of rumpon boosters in the operation of multi-level gillnets for crustacean fishing in Palabuhanratu Bay during 2024–2025 also increased the marketing margin by 34 percent,” he added.

On the same occasion, Dr Roza Yusfiandayani also introduced innovations in the form of underwater submersible lights, squid attractors, and portable fish aggregating devices.

In addition to Dr Zulkarnain and Dr Roza, Dr Didik Komarudin, Dr Iin Solihin, and Dr M Dahri Iskandar were also present as accompanying lecturers for the Dospulkam program.

According to Dr Roza, this technical guidance program will be even better with the ongoing collaboration between IPB University and local governments that have potential in fisheries and marine resources. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RMH)
