Purslane, a plant commonly known as a weed, has great potential in the world of cosmetics and traditional medicine. This was stated by Prof Syarifah Iis Aisyah, Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University.

She explained that purslane is a plant that is easy to grow and adapt without requiring special care. Purslane is classified as a wild plant because of its weed-like nature.

However, the beauty of its colorful flowers means that purslane is often used as a ground cover or bedding plant. “Even though it is a weed, purslane flowers have high aesthetic value and are often used to beautify gardens,” she explained.

Furthermore, Prof Iis explained that some types of krokot have high levels of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids and antioxidants, which play a major role in the world of natural medicine and cosmetics.

“Due to their rich bioactive content, certain types of krokot are now used as ingredients in traditional medicine,” she said.

In general, she continued, the species most commonly used for traditional medicine and cosmetic ingredients is Portulaca oleracea. This species has simpler flowers with single petals but requires more intensive maintenance than Portulaca grandiflora, which is known for its layered flowers with more varied and beautiful colors.

Prof Iis explained that Portulaca oleracea is known to contain high levels of anthocyanins, especially in maroon or purplish stems. This content makes this plant highly valuable in the formulation of modern cosmetic products.

“Several cosmetic brands have used Portulaca oleracea extract as a base ingredient for foundation products,” she said.

The purslane plant now offers not only aesthetic effects but also physiological benefits for the skin. “The use of purslane as a base ingredient in cosmetics can make the face appear brighter, provide a cooling effect on the skin, and enhance a more glowing complexion,” she added. (**/dr) (IAAS/NRA)
