Gebyar Nusantara (Genus) 2025 marks a new milestone in the organization of sustainable events at IPB University. Not only is it a cultural celebration, this event also integrates cultural preservation with environmentally friendly practices in line with the spirit of sustainability.

At the opening ceremony, IPB University Rector Prof Arif Satria expressed his appreciation to the students for organizing this year’s Genus. According to him, this event is an important effort in maintaining diversity on campus.

He also said that nature can be an inspiration in building national culture. Nature, he said, actually teaches humans about culture.

“Nature has diversity, interdependence, and networks,” said Prof Arif in the opening of Genus 2025, which carried the theme “Sustainable Culture of Harmony in the Archipelago” at Telaga Inspirasi Field, IPB Dramaga Campus, Bogor (9/12).

He continued, “We never cultivate forests, but forests can grow with a number of trees and plants. We also never feed fish in the sea, but fish in the sea can live. Why? Because nature has its own way of working.”

Indonesia is blessed with great diversity, both in terms of biodiversity and social diversity. This diversity, said Prof Arif, is a great gift to the Indonesian people.

“With this diversity, we must network, depend on each other, and support each other. Every piece of wisdom and insight from various ethnic groups is a potential that we must continue to preserve,” said Prof Arif.

Meanwhile, Noel Alvaro Sitanggang, a student of the Actuarial Science Study Program class of 60 and the chief executive of Genus 2025, emphasized that this year’s Genus not only showcases the cultural diversity of the archipelago, but also applies the principles of sustainable events.

“This year’s Genus has three focuses, namely waste management, carbon emission calculation, and transportation. All of these will be calculated and published as a commitment to sustainability,” he explained.

According to Noel, the waste produced during the event will be sorted into three categories before the final calculation. In addition, the committee will also calculate the potential carbon emissions, both from the event activities and the use of transportation by the committee and participants.

“After the series of activities is complete, we will calculate the total emissions and waste generated so that Genus can truly be claimed as a sustainable event,” he added.

Genus 2025 was attended by 20 regional student organizations (Omda) with a variety of activities. The event opened with Icon Costume and Cultural Carnival in the Healthy Morning Walk (Japas) activity.

Next, there was Putra Putri Omda (Papi Day), which will culminate on October 25th at Graha Widya Wisuda (GWW), as well as Kuliner Nusantara and Stand Kebudayaan on October 25th-26th. The highlight of the event will be closed with a Cultural Festival and the announcement of the winners on October 26th at GWW.

“The hope is that Genus 2025 will provide educational value, entertainment, and inspiration for all participants and visitors,” concluded Noel. (AS) (IAAS/NRA)
