Professor of Chemistry at IPB University, Prof Dyah Iswantini Pradono, revealed that the fruit asam gelugur (Garcinia atroviridis) holds extraordinary potential as a source of natural active compounds beneficial for human health.

Prof Dyah mentioned that the main compound contained in the fruit is (Hydroxycitric Acid/HCA). This organic compound plays the most significant role in giving the fruit its characteristic sour taste while also having benefits as a body slimming agent.

“Hydroxycitric acid or HCA is the main active compound of asam gelugur that has a significant effect as a weight loss agent,” explained Prof Dyah.

Furthermore, she explained that besides HCA, this fruit also contains citric acid, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and flavonoids, which have been studied to have various bioactive benefits.

“Research that has been conducted both in vitro and in vivo using experimental animals shows that asam gelugur is effective as a weight loss agent. This has been proven with patents granted for the use of this compound as a slimming agent,” said Prof Dyah.

According to her, the mechanism of HCA as a slimming agent is by inhibiting the activity of pancreatic lipase enzyme, which is the enzyme responsible for fat breakdown. “This compound works as a very good lipase inhibitor, thus able to inhibit fat absorption on the surface of the intestine,” she added.

Not only as a slimming agent, Prof Dyah added that the compounds in asam gelugur also have potential as antioxidants and antimicrobials. “The flavonoid and vitamin C content in this fruit contributes to antioxidant effects that can protect body cells from damage caused by free radicals,” she explained.

Asam gelugur, continued Prof Dyah, also has broad potential to be developed in various health, food, and cosmetic products. Prof Dyah said that the utilization of asam gelugur does not stop at laboratory research but has reached the stage of production and commercialization.

“Currently, there is already a product called Prolislim, which is the downstream result of research and produced by PT Indofarma Tbk. This product uses asam gelugur extract as the main active ingredient to reduce body weight,” she revealed.

The Prolislim product was initially categorized as a Traditional Medicine (OT). However, development continues to elevate its status to a Standardized Herbal Medicine (OHT). Prof Dyah explained that with the upgrade to OHT status, the product can have officially recognized efficacy claims. (dr) (IAAS/KMR)
