The Student Organization Capacity Building Program (PPK Ormawa) team of the Animal Nutrition and Feed Student Association (Himasiter) of IPB University again took concrete steps in overcoming environmental problems in Sinarsari Village, Dramaga District, Bogor, West Java.

Through the maggot cultivation program that has been running, students have provided facilities in the form of organic waste bins that are distributed to villagers. This initiative aims to facilitate the community in sorting organic waste which will later be processed into feed for maggot larvae, while reducing organic waste that often build up in the village.

Himasiter PPKO Team Leader, Mutiara Rizkia Nurkamil, states that this initiative is part of a long-term effort to build environmental awareness in Sinarsari Village.

“We understand that big changes start small. By providing organic waste bins to the residents, we hope they will be more aware of the importance of sorting waste and support the maggot cultivation efforts that have begun to run in this village,” Muti explained.

Muti explained that the distribution of organic waste bins was carried out in stages, starting with houses around the maggot cultivation site. Each household will receive two bins, one for organic and one for inorganic waste, with the hope that residents will become more accustomed to separating waste from home.

“The collected organic waste, such as leftover vegetables, fruits, and kitchen waste, will then be sent to the maggot processing center managed by the team and residents involved in this program,” she said.

One of the residents of Sinarsari Village, Indah, welcomed this initiative. “I used to be confused about how to do the separation of waste, but after getting this specific bin, it has become easier for me to sort it out. It turns out that organic waste can be used again for useful things, such as this maggot cultivation,” said Indah.

In addition, the Himasiter PPKO Team also routinely educates the community on how to properly manage waste. They collaborate with the village government to organize training and counseling on the importance of organic waste management and its impact on the environment and local economy.

“This education is also expected to encourage the community’s active participation in the maggot cultivation program, which is not only beneficial for the environment, but also has high economic value,” said Muti.

Through this program, Muti and the PPKO Himasiter Team are determined to make Sinarsari Village a model in community-based organic waste management. “By utilizing organic waste as material for maggot cultivation, they have succeeded in showing that waste is not only waste, but also an opportunity to create sustainable added value,” she said.
