"Break your fasting with sweet food and fruits such as papaya, bananas and dates especially", said Prof Dr Hardinsyah, Professor of the Faculty of Human Ecology (FEMA) IPB in the RRI Interactive Dialogue in Bogor on Tuesday (24/7).

"Besides it’s the Sunnah (practice) of the Prophet, eating dates when breaking the fasting has some advantages such as it can quickly recover lost energy," explained Prof. Hardinsyah.

Prof Hardinsyah added, apart from containing anti-oxidant, IPB research results indicate that dates also contain iron five times greater than honey, and vitamin C of approximately 752 times greater than other fruits.

"Dates also contain potassium, which is to control high blood pressure; thus having  no risk  when consumed by people suffering from hypertension. Dates are also very good for people with low blood pressure because dates contain lots of iron or pholate acid that may help the formation of red blood cells," said Prof Hardinsyah.

Unfortunately, the dates can not grow in Indonesia. The dates which are available in Indonesia are imported from Tunisia and other Middle East regions.

Nevertheless, says Prof. Hardinsyah, there are many fruits in Indonesia that are no less in their  good properties and they have greater efficacy than dates. "It is researchers of agriculture who can find such fruit," added Prof Hardinsyah. (Mtd).
