The Faculty of Agriculture (Faperta) of IPB University once again held the 2026 Indonesian Agricultural Olympiad (OPI) to introduce the wide range of opportunities in the agricultural sector to the younger generation.

The competition concluded at the IPB Dramaga Campus, Bogor, on(10/17), awarding 11 golden tickets to the winners to pursue their studies at IPB University through the achievement based admission pathway.

Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University, Prof Suryo Wiyono, said that OPI had entered its third year and would continue to be held because it positively encourages student achievement while introducing various fields of agricultural science.

According to him, agriculture is not limited to cultivation activities but also encompasses the application of advanced technology, automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and plant quarantine. These developments demonstrate that the agricultural sector offers diverse opportunities that the younger generation needs to explore.

“Agricultural science goes beyond the image of rice fields, buffaloes, mountains, and rivers that we often see in school textbooks. Agriculture also encompasses the use of advanced technology, automation, AI, plant quarantine, and various other fields that support people’s lives,” he said.

He also clarified the misconception that agricultural graduates can only work on plantations. According to him, the broad scope of agricultural science opens up career opportunities for the younger generation across various fields and enables them to contribute to national development.

“Congratulations to the golden ticket recipients. May this opportunity mark the beginning of their journey to develop their potential and play a role in advancing Indonesian agriculture,” said Prof Suryo.

Chair of the 2026 OPI Organizing Committee, Prof Syarifah Iis Aisyah, reported that this year’s competition attracted 539 participants across five categories. A total of 154 participants took part in the written proposal competition, 44 participated in the outstanding children of farmers essay competition, 19 competed in videography, 25 participated in the photography contest, and 237 took part in the quiz competition, divided into 79 teams.

Participants came from various regions, with the largest number from West Java, followed by Central Java, East Java, Jambi, Aceh, East Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, and Bali. The preliminary and semifinal rounds were conducted by province before participants advanced to the final round.

Muhammad Nur Asyik, representing the IPB University Faculty of Agriculture Alumni Association, viewed OPI as an opportunity to foster the younger generation’s enthusiasm for science and agriculture. “Indonesia needs a generation that is intelligent, innovative, and courageous enough to develop solutions to agricultural challenges,” he said.

Through OPI 2026, the Faculty of Agriculture of IPB University hopes to attract more young people to pursue agricultural studies and contribute to strengthening food security and advancing Indonesian agriculture. (AS) (IAAS/HRD)
