A total of 124 students from the Marine Science and Technology (ITK) Study Program, IPB University, class of 61, carried out a field trip as well as a coastal cleanup action along the Pelabuhanratu beach, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, not long ago.

This beach cleaning activity involved all students, assistants, technicians, and supervising lecturers, and was warmly welcomed by the surrounding community. Most of the collected waste consisted of packaged plastics, beverage bottles, and used wood, all of which have the potential to pollute the marine ecosystem.

Aside from being an act of environmental concern, this activity is an integral part of practical field learning. This step is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in understanding the characteristics of coastal ecosystems, marine survey techniques, and the application of sustainability principles in marine resource management.

The lecturer in charge of the activity, Dr Steven Solikin, conveyed that this field trip is a real form of the implementation of experience-based learning (experiential learning), which is important for marine students.

“We want students to not only understand theory, but also be able to directly apply scientific concepts in the field. Through this activity, they learn to observe, analyze, and contribute to real solutions in coastal environments,” said Dr Steven.

He added that the coastal cleanup action carried out by the students also serves as a symbol of the younger generation’s concern for the sea.

“Protecting the sea is not just a slogan, but must be realized through action. We hope this coastal cleanup can cultivate a sense of ecological responsibility and strengthen the spirit of ITK students as agents of change for a sustainable ocean,” he added.

Through a combination of academic practice and social-environmental activities, ITK students are expected to become more sensitive to marine issues and be able to play an active role in maintaining the sustainability of Indonesia’s marine resources.

This field trip also serves as an opportunity to strengthen solidarity among students as well as foster a sense of pride in being part of an academic community that cares about marine conservation and the future of the blue planet. (*/Rz) (IAAS/KMR)
