The Association of Animal Production and Technology Students (Himaproter) at IPB University successfully implemented the “Himaproter Mengabdi 2025” program in North Cianjur recently. In this initiative, students introduced an innovative antiseptic dip made from betel leaf extract to address the needs of local farmers.

The program was carried out in collaboration with the Cianjur Utara Cattle Farmers Cooperative (KPS) and six small-scale farms in Cianjur and surrounding areas. The program was attended by 21 students from the Department of Animal Production Technology (IPTP), Faculty of Animal Science, IPB University.

Arsye, the president of the program, said that the farmers were invited to attend a demonstration on how to make betel leaf antiseptic dip to keep the cows’ teats clean.

“We must maintain the hygiene and sanitation of dairy cows so that milk production can be maximized and the nutrients contained in the milk can meet the body’s needs,” he said during the seminar.

The practical demonstration involved applying the antiseptic solution for approximately five days, followed by a control test using the California Mastitis Test (CMT). The results were presented during the closing ceremony and a focus group discussion (FGD) held in Garung 1 Village.

“The presence of our friends from IPB has greatly helped me in managing my farm, especially now that my father is ill,” said Isram, a farmer from Cipanas Jaya.

Internship and Community Service

Meyzia, one of the participants of Himaproter Mengabdi, said that this program successfully combined internship and community service activities, creating synergy between farmers and students.

A series of activities were successfully carried out. These included directly participating in the daily activities of dairy farmers, contributing to the administration of deworming medication and vitamins, recording livestock populations, and assisting in the milk collection process and quality control of the collected milk.

For her, this program is not only about providing hands-on experience at a smallholder farm and being directly involved in the production and processing of milk, but also providing concrete solutions for local farmers.

“Thank you to the management of KPS Cianjur Utara and the farmers for the opportunity and warm welcome during our 14 days of learning here. This experience is very valuable. May our friendship continue, and may the innovation of dipping cow udders with betel leaves that we brought back be useful in improving milk quality,” said Meyzia. (*/Rz) (IAAS/LAN)
