Former Rector of IPB, Prof. AM Satari Passed Away

Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) expresses deepest condolences on the death of Prof Dr Ir Achmad Memed Satari, MF. The deceased died in Fatmawati Hospital on April 4, 2016 at 21:46 pm due to illness at the age of 83 years.

 

He was born on March 13, 1933, graduated from the Department of Forestry UI in 1958, and got his Master of Forestry at Oregon State University in 1961 and PhD in Soil Science from Michigan State University in 1967. As a scientist he has worked for the Faculty of Agriculture, IPB, specializing in Soil Science. The deceased was appointed Professor of Soil Science at IPB in1970.

 

The deceased was an IPB Rector for the periods of 1970-1974 and 1974-1978. The monumental policies implemented during his tenure were IPB development plan for the first time, the curriculum of 4-year Bachelor Program in 1972, the establishment of the Graduate School (1975) and the opening of the Doctoral Program (1978). The deceased was the first Chairman of the Consortium of Agricultural Sciences.

 

A number of other positions once entrusted to him include Director of Bogor Agricultural Research Center (1973-1976), Chairman of the Center of Excellence (UI, IPB, ITB, UGM, UNAIR) (1974-1975), Expertise Staff of Young Minister of Food Production (1978-1983) , Chairman of Deputy Basic and Applied Sciences (PDIT) of BPPT (1983-1990), Secretary of State for Population and the Environment (1988-1990), Member of the National Research Council (1984-1994), Expertise Staff of Forestry Ministry (1992-2001).

 

He was also involved in several nonstructural activities such as Chairman of Sago Forest Research and Development Team (1984-1994), Chairman of Research and Development Team in Baliem Valley (Wamena) and Jaya Wijaya Mountains (Tiom) (1985-1995), Chairman of the Expert Team Guidance Food Security Department of Agriculture (1999-2000), Chairman of the Committee on Reform and Development of Forestry and Agriculture (1998-2000), and assistance on forestry cooperation with Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) Darussalam of Wanayasa in integrated agriculture through a Community Forest Pattern (2001-2002).

 

Prof. AM Satari is recorded as members of some professional associations: Association of Indonesian Engineers (1957), Delta Phi Society (1958), Association of Forestry Graduates (1959), Sigma Xi Society (1967), Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Soil Science (1970-1974) and Agronomy Association of Indonesia (1980).

 

Awards or appreciations given to him among others include Pahala Alma from IPB, Medal of Development, Commandeur in de Leopolds order of Belgium as Rector, the Awards from the Association of Indonesian Engineers in Agricultural Engineering, Award from the USDA in Soil and Water Conservation, Honorary President of the International Sago Development Center of Japan, the Award from the University of Cendrawasih as a pioneer researcher of Sago and a number of other awards.

 

IPB Rector, Prof. Dr. Herry Suhardiyanto said, with the death of Prof. AM Satari, IPB lost a great teacher and leader who was very influential to IPB. "The deceased was a Rector who led IPB on hard times but over thanks to the grace of Allah and with dedication, exemplary, and hard work of the deceased, IPB then can achieve rapid progress. May the leaders of IPB, the working units, and all IPB academicians can learn from the good models of the deceased"

 

Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Yonny Koesmaryono, MS expressed the feeling of deep loss over the death. The late Prof. Satari is a highly respected professor and rector of a very high integrity and leadership. He was a father and a highly respected teacher, who always wisely supported and protected the student movements at that time.

 

The corpse is planned to be buried at the family cemetery in Bandung on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. The deceased will depart from Baranangsiang campus of IPB and be given prayers in the Mosque of IPB alumni. IPB academic communities express deepest sadness. May the deeds of the deceased be accepted by Allah SWT (God the Almighty), his sins forgiven and put in the best possible place with Allah SWT. Aamiin. (Mtd)
