Smokers actually have a lack of affection; this was the short words from Dr. Sri Budiarti as a guest speaker in the Evening Dialogue on the World Anti-Tobacco Day in RRI, Bogor, (24 / 5).

Furthermore, Dr. Sri said the danger of tobacco is when it is burned – in the cigarette smoke there are more substances that are harmful to the body organs. More than 1,500 harmful substances are present in cigarette smoke.

Indirectly, smokers disturb other people because of the harmful substances in cigarette smoke and when inhaled they can poison our blood and this will circulate throughout the body, and so what would happen to our bodies that should be fed with oxygen but exposed to cigarette smoke?, asked Dr. Sri.

Many diseases can come out of smoking. According to her, almost over 80% of patients with coronary heart diseases in the Harapan Kita Hospital are caused by smoking. Also people with diabetes mellitus who smoke will worsen the disease because of the reduced insulin levels in the body.

Other diseases could also appear such as cancer, decreased immunity, not having offspring and so forth.

Public perception that without smoking cigarettes tend to make them less enthusiastic in carrying out activities is simply because they are already addicted – like narkoba (narcotics, cigarettes and drugs), cigarettes contain addictive substance that would cause addiction among users.
In addition, the greater concern is that the majority of smokers in Indonesia come from the lower economic community, said Dr. Sri.

"Quitting smoking is not easy because the urge to smoke again will be very strong and difficult to avoid". This was expressed by a listener who had been suffering from pneumonia or lung inflammation as a result of smoking.

Dr. Sri does not recommend eating snacks or candies in the transition to the ending of smoking cigarettes because it can cause diseases such as high cholesterol levels and diabetes. Dr Sri suggests consuming fruits as much as 400 grams per day as this can increase the body immunity because most fruits contain antioxidants that can counteract free radicals in the body.

In addition, the efforts to stop smoking should be made of self-awareness of the dangers of smoking so that there would be no desire to smoke.
