c et chic: IPB University Lecturer Innovation to Reduce Caries Cases in Indonesia

Attention to dental and oral health is often overlooked. Disturbances in the teeth and mouth will cause disturbances in daily life. Such as declining health in general, lowering self-confidence and interfering with the performance of daily life. A common dental disease is caries. In Indonesia, cases of dental caries can be said to be quite high.
Dr Yessie Widya Sari, Lecturer at the Department of Physics at IPB University, together with Dr Wulan Tri Wahyuni, Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry who is also a researcher at the Tropical Biopharmaca Research Center (Trop BRC) IPB University made an innovation called "c et chic" toothpaste. The discovery of this toothpaste was incorporated in Productive Innovative Research (Rispro) of the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP) of the Ministry of Finance.
"Recent people's lifestyles have a tendency to consume a lot of food and drinks that can trigger dental caries. Among them are sweet and sour foods. The Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry and the Center for Tropical Biopharmaceutical Studies have a desire to minimize caries cases in Indonesia," said Dr Yessie.
She said, c et chic is an innovation made from two combinations of nano hydroxyapatite and black rhizome. "The toothpaste that we produce contains a triple action, namely a compound that is capable of remineralizing, as an anti-bacterial, and as an anti-plaque agent. Dental compounds have characters analogous to those of human bone minerals. The presence of nano hydroxyapatite will be able to close the holes in the teeth. The triple action of the combination of nano hydroxyapatite and black rhizome essential oil is entirely sourced from within the country, so there is no need to depend on imported supplies," she said.
She explained, the process of making c et chic pasta itself consists of three stages, namely burning egg shells using a furnace to produce calcium oxide. Then mixing the burning calcium with phosphate compounds to produce nano hydroxyapatite.
“The second stage is the distillation process of black turmeric rhizome to obtain essential oil. And in the final stage, mix nano hydroxyapatite with black rhizome oil into the main ingredient of toothpaste to produce c et chic toothpaste," she explained.
She claims, c et chic toothpaste has advantages compared to commercial toothpaste on the market. Namely from the rhizome of black turmeric and nano hydroxyapatite from egg shells. "It is hoped that the c et chic innovation can reduce the number of caries rates in Indonesia. If this is achieved, it will be able to improve the lives of the Indonesian people," she said.
