IPB University Small and Medium Industry Development Study Program (MPI) won Very Good accreditation based on the Decree of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN PT) No 9652/SK/BAN-PT/Ak.Ppj/M/XI/2022 dated 16 November 2022. This accreditation will be valid from 2022 to 2027.
The MPI Study Program is a multidisciplinary study program under the Postgraduate School (SPs) of IPB University which was founded in 2001. According to Prof. Musa Hubeis, Head of the MPI Study Program, Small and Medium Enterprises (UKM) are one of the pillars of community economic development, especially for developing countries.
Small and Medium Industry (IKM) is one form of SMEs that can be considered as a locomotive for national and regional (regional) economic growth. SMEs have the potential to empower all available resources and encourage the growth of entrepreneurial development.
He explained, SMEs or Small and Medium Industries (IKM) are currently facing many problems and challenges, including in terms of financing, networking, technology, management and especially human resources (HR). In addition, SMEs have unique characteristics that are different from large industries or corporations.
He added that such characteristics need to be comprehensively understood by relevant stakeholders, such as government agencies and financial institutions in order to be able to provide appropriate assistance, guidance and financing. In fact, large companies, both private and State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), also need to understand IKM comprehensively in order to build mutually beneficial partnerships. One of the ways can be by channeling Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the form of sustainable IKM development.
"The MPI Study Program is here to answer these challenges in order to increase the technical, managerial and entrepreneurial capacities needed in the development of SMEs. The MPI study program is the first postgraduate program in Indonesia that is specifically designed to understand and develop SMEs," he said.
He added, since it was launched on October 8 2001 by the Rector of IPB University, the MPI Study Program has produced many graduates. Students for this program consist of undergraduate graduates, both fresh graduates and those who have worked professionally in various organizations that are directly or indirectly related to IKM. such as government agencies, banking, companies or industries (both state-owned and private), research institutions or universities and the IKM itself.
"Currently the MPI Study Program accepts students twice a year. Acceptance is in odd or even semesters, according to the acceptance period at SPs IPB University. We only open one route, namely special organizing classes (Friday and Saturday)," he concluded.
Prof. Musa Hubeis said that this program was designed with the competency approach needed in the field in carrying out tasks in the field of work related to IKM. The aim is to produce postgraduate graduates through academic education pathways that are immediately used in various economic sectors, including the IKM sub-sector which is supported by theoretical and practical abilities. The MPI Study Program also produces academic postgraduate graduates who have comprehensive knowledge of the development of various creative, innovative and productive activities.
"The aim of these three programs is to foster and develop networks between the academic world, the business world, related institutions and the wider community in producing postgraduate graduates who have a high level of concern and consistency in national development," he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Sapta Raharja, Secretary of the MPI Study Program added that currently the MPI Study Program has several fields of study including management, entrepreneurship, empowerment, technology and matters that are currently relevant. (HBL/Zul)
