Prof Euis Sunarti Explains the Importance of Housewife Mental Health in the Family


Prof. Euis Sunarti, Professor of IPB University said, there are two types of women who work. First because of her passion and aspirations and second because she was forced to. The same is true for housewives, some by choice and relying on their husband's income. Some are forced, because there are family members who need attention.

This expert in the field of Family and Consumer Science, Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema) IPB University said that this would be different in terms of phenomena and stressors. For women who work, the types of challenges and work pressures will affect stress. Likewise, the presence of children and the support of the surrounding environment. 

"Self-maturity, mental, intellectual, emotional and spiritual development must complement each other. This will have an effect on managing existing problems," she explained.

Prof. Euis emphasized the importance of women building a positive self-identity. "If you want to be a mother and consider it prestige and noble, then don't be disturbed by the movement that says that being a mother is powerless. Especially with the reason for gender equality which states that women only have quality if they go out of the house and work, get the same position as men and contribute the same economy as her husband," she said.

She added that women's empowerment should not be separated from the family. According to her, resilience is the family's ability to survive in crisis conditions.

"We never know how resilient we are until we experience a crisis. However, resilience can be measured from the existing potential, for example whether we have a good believe system, beliefs about qadha and qadar. Patterns of organization, communication or good neighbors are family support systems," she explained. 

In the case of housewives, he continued, stressors can be seen in the various roles of women in the family. Mother can be said as a planner, director of operations and finance manager. If it is carried out, because of choice, it cannot be separated from stressors, especially if it is forced and not sincere.

Prof. Euis's insincerity causes all things that were originally positive and meaningful to worship can turn out to be the other way around.

"Actually, mothers are sincere in carrying out household chores but because they are upset with their husbands, they are not sincere. Husbands must understand what makes their wives upset. Mothers must also be able to manage so that disloyalty does not occur, this ability must be owned by women and understanding from the environment and society is also needed. husband," she explained.

According to Prof. Euis, conflicts occur because of the struggle for limited resources, namely time, thought and finance. "Family problems often do not significantly affect work, but problems at work significantly affect families," she said.

Therefore, she added, it is important to understand family work balance tips. Starting from reinterpreting family goals, improving communication, preparing plans and lists of family needs and maximizing social support.

For stress management, Prof. Euis said that the first thing is the need for an introduction to stressors. The second raises and strengthens a positive self-concept, a warm and open personality. Third, optimize internal assets in dealing with mental health such as knowledge and religious values.

"From an external perspective, namely the effectiveness of networks and social support such as religious experts, counselors or psychiatrists," he said. He added, "For a Muslim for example, of course dhikr will help in getting calm, making patience and praying as a helper," she said. (IR/Zul)
