The occurrence of strong winds and tornadoes that have just occurred in the Bogor region and caused property casualties (6/12/2018) is not the first. This is also proof that Bogor is actually predominantly hydroclimatological. Because this is not the first to occur in Bogor, but that does not mean we continue to think this is something that does not need to be anticipated.

Thus the opinion of Dr. Perdinan, spatial climatologist of the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) who also serves as Secretary of the Center for Disaster Studies, Institute for Research and Community Service (PSB LPPM) IPB. In a previous meeting with the Mayor of Bogor, PSB LPPM IPB had already conveyed the potential hazards and disasters that are common in Bogor, namely strong winds, floods and inundations, landslides, and fires.

Further Dr. Perdinan said that the risk of strong winds usually arises during a seasonal shift due to pressure differences. The city of Bogor with a flat contoured structure is one of the triggers for the tornado. The difference in pressure and movement of the wind continues to cause the accumulation of clouds accompanied by wind as is happening now.

In a meeting with the Mayor of Bogor, Dr. Perdinan suggested that there should be a series of anticipatory steps including mapping of potentially strong winds, mapping of spatial distribution of trees with type and age, topographic mapping and slope of the area, and arrangement of trees in urban areas.

According to him, usually many parties will forget about the occurrence of this disaster so that notes are only left in the media quote. For this reason, he urged the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to immediately collect all incident data from the last 10 years and map the level of danger and frequency. Furthermore, it can be used as a mitigation guideline based on disaster-prone areas. Thus, in the future the city of Bogor can be more anticipatory in addressing any changes and risks that will occur. (NR)
