IPB Cooperates with Japan’s Renowned Institutions on Intelligent Environmental Monitoring System Development


The delegation of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) held a series of collaborative meetings with Japanese partner institutions on October 22nd and 23rd, 2018. Representatives consisted of Dr. Arif Satria - Chancellor of IPB, Prof. MA Chozin - Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Sintho W Ardie - Head of International Program Services Sub Directorate, IPB International Program Directorate. After arrival in Tokyo, the event began with a joint meeting with the Indonesian Deputy Ambassador to Japan - Mochamad Abas Ridwan and Education Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in Japan - Dr. Alinda FM Zain at the Office of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo. The discussion emphasized the importance of the role of higher education in strengthening Japanese-Indonesian relations, especially in the field of fisheries and agriculture. During a souvenir exchange session, Dr. Arif Satria received T-shirts to commemorate the 60th year of Indonesia-Japan relations from the Embassy, while IPB handed over the IPB promotion package. Afterwards, the delegation continued to the Tokyo University of Agriculture (Tokyo NODAI). The agenda for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) update between Tokyo NODAI and IPB. Tokyo NODAI was represented by Dr. Katsumi TAKANO - President, Dr. Yoichi SAKATA - Director of the International Program Center, Dr. Kojiro SUZUKI - Deputy Director of Center for International Program, Mr. Yasuyuki ASANO - Chief Officer, Mr. Koichi YOSHINO - Head of the International Program and Ms. Naho GOTO - Assistant Head of International Program Center. IPB was concluded to be the host of the 20th International Student Summit (ISS) in 2020. The invited parties also agreed to contribute to increase collaboration in other fields, namely not only adhered to academic field but also in research.

On the next day, the delegation made an honorary visit to the University of Tokyo, Japan. This visit aimed to strengthen cooperation that has lasted more than 30 years between IPB and the University of Tokyo. IPB delegation was welcomed by Dr. Takeshi Tange - Dean of the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Toru Fujiwara - Head of Office for International Cooperation & Exchange, and Prof. Tetsuo Takano - Director for the Asian Natural Environmental Science Center. The discussion focused on strengthening the existing cooperation between the two institutions, namely in the fields of academic and research, especially on smart agriculture and genetic engineering. The delegations proceed to visit the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) in Tsukuba Japan, intended as a return visit after the visit of NIES to IPB in August 2018. The delegation from IPB was welcomed by Dr. Chiho Watanabe - President, Dr. Tsuyoshi Fujita - Director for the Center for Social and Environmental System Research, Dr. Shoji F. Nakayama - Head, Center for Health and Environmental Risk Research, Dr. Manabu Onuma - Senior Researcher at the Center for Environmental Biology and Ecosystem Studies, and Dr. Shuichi Ashina - Manager of International Coordination Office. The discussion during this visit focused on "Smart Eco-monitoring System for Low Carbon Society", "Genetic Resource Bank for Endangered Species in Asia", and "Japan Environment and Chlidren's Study (JECS)". Delegates had the opportunity to visit the Time Capsule Gene Bank installation - a germplasm preservation unit with cryopreservation technology in NIES. The effort to build a Gene Bank is important because Indonesia is very rich in biodiversity that must be conserved. The collaboration between IPB and NIES is also conducted in order to accelerate the establishment of IPB Green Campus 2020. Both institutions agree to develop an Intelligent Environmental Monitoring System that is very significant in facing future challenges. NIES has provided a number of monitoring tools and has been collaborating with the CCROM of IPB.
