IPB Student Studies the Antioxidants of Red Betel Leaf


Reni Septiani, Student of Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Bogor Agricultural University (FMIPA IPB) conducted a research on red betel leaf. Red betel leaf has efficacy as medicine and antioxidant. The leaf extract contains flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids which can act as antioxidants. However, the fraction of red betel leaf extract is not known whether the content can play as an antioxidant as well. The research conducted by Reni also aimed to know the active compounds that act specifically as antioxidants in red betel leaf.

The fraction of red betel leaf extract studied were water fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, n-hexane fraction by 2,2-diphenyl 1-pichylhydazy or DPPH method. The results showed that fractions of red betel extract have the same content with the extract as an antioxidant. The highest antioxidant activity was found on ethyl acetate fraction with IC50 value of 13.15 μg/mL. Analysis of the active compounds performed by using Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) showed that the fraction of ethyl acetate contains five compounds.

IC50 value itself is the concentration of tested compounds needed to inhibit DPPH free radicals by 50 percent. These results indicated that both the extract and the fractions of extract of red betel leaf have a potency as antioxidants.

Antioxidants are compounds capable of neutralizing or stabilizing free radicals. Looking at the condition of society today, free radicals are scattered in many environments without us knowing it. This is very dangerous because free radicals can damage the structure and function of cells and trigger the onset of degenerative diseases such as heart disease, atherosclerosis, cancer, and diabetes mellitus.
