Dr. Arif Satria, a 46 year-old IPB Rector


Dr. Arif Satria was sworn in by Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) to become the new rector for the period of 2017-2022 through the Plenary Session of the Rector Inauguration at Andi Hakim Nasoetion Auditorium, Dramaga IPB Campus, Bogor (15/12). Dr. Arif, born in Pekalongan, was elected as IPB Rector in his young age, 46 years old. Before becoming rector, he served as Dean of Faculty of Human Ecology (FEMA) IPB.

Dr. Arif received his undergraduate degree majoring in Social Economics, Faculty of Agriculture (IPB), then continued his master's degree in Rural Sociology of IPB and earned his Doctorate degree at Marine Policy of Kagoshima University, Japan. He also had been a Visiting Fellow at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Dr. Arif is a lecturer of FEMA IPB since 2010 after previously serving as a lecturer in the Department of Fisheries Social Economics IPB. He also is an adviser to the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in 2012. In addition, he also served as Director of Research and Strategic Studies IPB (2008-2010); Chairman of the Indonesian Agricultural Bachelor Association (2010-2014); Vice Chairman of the International Indonesian Institute of Scientists (2009-2010); and Members of the Indonesian Ocean Council (2013-2017).

Dr. Arif has been actively involved in drafting of marine and fishery policies since 2002 such as the drafting of the Fisheries Law 31/2004; Revision of the Law on the Management of Coastal Areas and Small Islands; Preparation of the Blue Economic Concept; as well as a number of Government and Ministerial Regulations.

He also actively writes in the media by becoming an ecologist-political columnist. There are more than 120 articles published in Kompas, Republika, GATRA Magazine, Koran Sindo, TROBOS, TEMPO Newspaper, Media Indonesia Daily, Sinar Harapan, Jurnal Nasional dan Suara Pembaruan, and others. In addition, Dr. Arif also became Peer Reviewer and author in various international journals namely the Journal of Marine Policy (Elsevier); Journal of Environment and Development (SAGE Publications); Journal of Environment, Development and Sustainability (Springer); Journal of Environment and Sustainable Development (Inderscience); Journal of Regional Fisheries Research, Japan; and Journal of International Fisheries.

During his service in IPB, Dr. Arif has won several awards both nationally and internationally, such as the Extraordinary Intellectual Property Award-2009 in the Science Category of the Minister of National Education; Yamamoto Award-2008; The First Winner of the JIFRS Yamamoto Prize for the Best Paper, at the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET) Conference (2008), in Nha Trang Vietnam. IIFET is a profession organization of socio-economic fisheries which the secretariat is at Oregon State University, USA; as well as the Awardee of Fisheries Extension and Human Resources Awareness, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (2013).
