Andi Hakim Nasoetion Building, IPB campus, Dramaga, Was Rated to Have Bronze Value by GBCI Gedung

Construction of a building should be environmentally sound and in accordance with the principles of environmental conservation with an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability patterns. In a green building, eco-construction, the structural creation processes respect the environment and make efficient use of resources.

If not, then the building causes ecosystem imbalance and environmental damage. Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) says the building contributes the largest greenhouse gas on earth. Buildings produce about 30-40 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. The building has a significant share in the environmental damage process, if not designed, built and managed properly and applying the principles of sustainability. The ideal green building would be a building project that would allow you to preserve most of the natural environment around the project site, while still being able to produce a building that is going to serve a purpose. The construction and operation will promote a healthy environment for all involved, and it will not disrupt the land, water, resources and energy in and around the building. This is the actual definition of a green building.

The concept of green building can be applied to new building and new building. Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable building) refers to both a structure and the application of processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from planning to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. Green building must be positioned in a level that can be understood or measured by reference (standard) particular. Therefore, a measuring instrument is needed to measure the green building level of a building.

Three researchers from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Technology of Bogor Agricultural University (FATETA IPB), Dr. Erizal, Dr. Yudi Chadirin and Dr. Muhammad Fauzan had chosen the Andi Hakim Nasution Building (AHN) as the object of green building study because it has become the icon of IPB Campus, Dramaga. This research is aim to assess the Andi Hakim Nasoetion Building to implement the criteria of green building in GBCI’s greenship rating tools, in particular categories of water conservation and building environment management. Moreover, the study aims to evaluate several innovative R&D products developed for the construction of the building, including carbon emissions, wastage, depletion of resources

The purpose of this study was to assess the rating criteria and the application of green building criteria in buildings on AHN Building based on the national standard of Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI). The main criteria chosen, then direct measuring is done in some buildings that was selected by sampling purpose. The objectives of study were to examine the application of green bulding principles at AHN Rectorate Building of IPB through assessment based on existing building 1.0 issued by GBCI, to rank the building based on the GBCI scoring system. This study was planned for one year implementation, specifically to assess six aspects of green building in as stated in the GREENSHIP (Green Building Council Indonesia) version 1.0. To raise the rating to green campus (eco-campus) in the future, suggestion was given to the manager of campus buildings in order to undertake real efforts to improve the campus infrastructure according to GBCI.

The assessment on six aspects of green building criteria referring to the GREENSHIP GBCI national standard with rating system for building awake version 1.0, AHN Rectorate Building IPB managed to get a total of 52 points value or 44 percent of the maximum 117 points of value. The results of the study concluded that the AHN building, of IPB campus, Dramaga, at this time has rating value of bronze according to GBCI.

Currently IPB has provided environmentally friendly facilities in Dramaga Campus, such as electric cars in campus environment, parking and bicycle path, the use of solar energy as an alternative energy source for street lighting around student dormitory. The solar energy is also utilized for water treatment plant for clean water supply. This year the university has planned to install other facilities, so on the year  2020 IPB will definitely be proclaimed as the Green Campus. The hope of IPB Campus will be more environmentally friendly and managed by applying sustainable principles. However, so far no single building in the campus of IPB, either new building or the existed buildings are granted green building certificate as the embodiment of green campus program. Thus, it is necessary to study program to evaluate  the application of green building principles for the existed buildings in IPB campus, Dramaga,  in order to realize the IPB Green Campus 2020.
