Symposium of Climate Change Research

News

Since the late 1980s, before the Government of Indonesia ratified the Act of Climate Change, IPB has initiated studies of climate and its changes. With the IPB vision toward a research-based university and the growing issue of climate change and the presence of climate change mainstreaming in the development programs of Indonesia, the studies by IPB related to climate changes are growing, involving researchers of different scientific backgrounds.

This was expressed by Head of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) IPB, Prof. Dr. Bambang Pramudya in the "Symposium on Climate Change Research in Indonesia", on Monday (3/10) at IPB International Convention Center. The symposium was organized in cooperation of Bogor Agricultural University and Ministry of Environment of RI.
"The results of the research conducted by IPB are expected to develop and enrich the research results at the national level, and be applicable at the community level to deal with climate change impacts," said Prof. Bambang.

A similar idea was also expressed by Head of the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences IPB, Dr. Rini Hidayati. According to her, the studies conducted IPB academic communities can become the scientific basis and the results can be synthesized and useful in finding solution to problems and making climate change-related policies in Indonesia.

Deputy Assistant for Mitigation and Preservation of Atmospheric Function of KLH Ir. Sulistyowati, MM, says Indonesia has many researchers from the government, academicians and non-governmental organizations; they have made scientific assessments related to climate change adaptation and mitigation. However, they are snot yet optimally utilized and do not properly accommodate a variety of fundamental and urgent problems needed to address the global warming and climate change.

Therefore, the inventory of research results and discussions of various scientific circles in this symposium is expected to be beneficial and used as an input to the government and policy makers in planning and implementing the development, especially related to the mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

The symposium held as a series of activities in IPB’s 48th Anniversary also launched the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Indonesia. (Mtd)
